Job Summary

Absa Trust Limited is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Legal Counsel (Advice and Investments) to provide strategic legal support across trust, fiduciary, investment, and advisory operations.

The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality legal advice, ensuring regulatory compliance, mitigating legal risks, and supporting business growth through sound legal strategies. This role requires a professional who can balance technical legal expertise with commercial awareness in a highly regulated financial services environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert legal advice on investment products, trust structures, fiduciary services, and wealth management matters.
  • Draft, review, negotiate, and interpret legal agreements, contracts, mandates, and investment documentation.
  • Support internal stakeholders with regulatory and compliance matters related to banking, trusts, and financial services legislation.
  • Identify and manage legal risks affecting trust and investment operations.
  • Advise on corporate governance matters and ensure alignment with internal policies and external regulations.
  • Manage disputes, litigation matters, and external legal counsel relationships when required.
  • Review changes in financial legislation and provide practical legal guidance to business units.
  • Support product development initiatives by ensuring legal and regulatory readiness.
  • Participate in strategic business projects involving acquisitions, investments, and client advisory structures.
  • Conduct legal training sessions for internal teams to strengthen compliance awareness.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or equivalent recognized legal qualification.
  • Admission as an Attorney, Advocate, or equivalent legal practitioner.
  • Postgraduate qualification in Corporate Law, Banking Law, Trust Law, or Financial Regulation will be advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of banking regulations, trust law, investment structures, and fiduciary obligations.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and legal interpretation skills.
  • Strong commercial acumen with the ability to provide practical business-focused solutions.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills.

Experience

  • Minimum 5–8 years of post-qualification legal experience.
  • Proven experience in banking, financial services, wealth management, trust administration, or corporate legal advisory roles.
  • Experience working with investment products, fiduciary services, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Prior in-house legal counsel experience within a financial institution is highly desirable.

Working Hours

  • Full-time permanent position.
  • Standard business hours: Monday to Friday.
  • Additional hours may be required based on business priorities, transaction deadlines, or regulatory matters.
  • Hybrid or office-based working arrangements may apply depending on business requirements.
