Job Summary
Rand Water is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Senior Water Quality Technician – Compliance and Sampling to support the organization’s commitment to delivering safe, high-quality drinking water. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting water sampling activities, monitoring compliance with regulatory standards, analyzing results, and ensuring adherence to quality assurance protocols across water treatment and distribution systems.
This position plays a critical role in protecting public health, supporting environmental compliance, and maintaining Rand Water’s reputation for operational excellence in water quality management.
Key Responsibilities

Conduct routine and specialized sampling of raw water, treated water, reservoir water, and distribution network samples.

Perform field-based physical, chemical, and microbiological water quality assessments.

Ensure all sampling procedures comply with national water regulations, internal standards, and laboratory protocols.

Monitor water quality trends and identify deviations from compliance requirements.

Prepare, label, preserve, and transport samples according to chain-of-custody procedures.

Maintain calibration and functionality of field sampling equipment and testing instruments.

Compile technical reports, compliance summaries, and sampling records for internal and external stakeholders.

Investigate non-compliance incidents and recommend corrective actions.

Support audits, inspections, and accreditation processes.

Mentor junior technicians and provide technical guidance during field operations.

Coordinate with laboratories, treatment plant operators, engineers, and environmental teams to resolve water quality issues.

Ensure adherence to health, safety, and environmental standards during all sampling activities.
Required Skills and Qualifications

National Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Water Care, Chemistry, Microbiology, or related scientific discipline.

Registration with relevant professional bodies will be advantageous.

Valid driver’s license with willingness to travel to multiple sampling locations.

Certification in water sampling, laboratory practices, or quality assurance is preferred.
Experience
-
Minimum 5–8 years of relevant experience in water quality monitoring, laboratory testing, or environmental compliance.

Proven experience in potable water treatment environments or municipal water services.

Strong understanding of sampling methodologies, compliance reporting, and regulatory inspections.

Experience supervising technical teams is highly desirable.
Working Hours

Standard working schedule: 40 hours per week

Monday to Friday

May be required to work weekends, public holidays, or after-hours during emergency incidents, shutdowns, or urgent compliance investigations.

Field travel may be required across operational sites.
